ACTS VIII | CHURCH HURT: PAIN MAY CHANGE YOUR LOCATION BUT NOT YOUR CALLING

The sermon "Acts VIII | Church Hurt: Pain May Change Your Location But Not Your Calling" by Pastor Onke Nyokana addresses the reality that many people avoid church due to being hurt by it. Using the biblical context of Samaria and the ministry of Philip, the sermon explores how believers can carry their purpose even through seasons of displacement and pain.

Pastor Nyokana highlights that Jesus broke the cultural barriers and planted seeds of faith in unlikely, often marginalised places such as Samaria, a place the Jewish people associated with idolatry and awkward culture.  The message emphasises that while personal suffering or church hurt may alter an individual's physical or social circumstances, it should never extinguish their divine calling. This sermon serves as a call for healing and restoration, urging those who have been discouraged by leadership failures or rejection to reclaim their spiritual authority. Through the example of Phillip's ministry, this sermon illustrates that true power can bring out joy and transformation even to cities once dominated by falsehood and idolatry.

The power of the Holy Spirit: Carrier vs Consumers

When persecution scattered the believers in Jerusalem, it actually led to the expansion of the Kingdom. Philip went to Samaria and, through the power of the Holy Spirit, brought great joy to the city by performing miracles and healing the paralyzed.

  • Real vs. Fake Power: In Samaria, Philip encountered Simon the Sorcerer. The sermon notes that "when true power meets fake power, fake power does not have any other alternative but to bow".

  • Carriers of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit is intended for "carriers," not just "consumers". Consumers wait for a Sunday emotional experience, but carriers utilize the power of God in their everyday lives—at work, in business, and in their homes—to address evil and bring transformation.

Sustaining Calling Through Pain

The core message of the sermon is that "wounded people can still carry God’s power". Many believers stop serving because of betrayal, rejection, or disappointment by leadership, but these experiences should not end their ministry.

  • Location vs. Calling: Pastor Nyokana emphasizes that while pain may have changed your location, it must not change your calling.

  • Purpose over Bitterness: Displacement, whether spiritual, emotional, or geographical, is often a short period where God is teaching something. The goal is for believers to remain alive in their purpose, ensuring that their fire is not extinguished by the hurt they have endured.
